Abstract
A general description is presented of fiber-optic hardware methods of modulation, methods of fiber-cable installation, splicing considerations, and testing for power system protection applications. A section on economics gives a method for assessing the profitability of installing a multiuse fiber-optic communication system. The protective relaying equipment now available for use over fiber-optic channels, including equipment which interfaces existing pilot wire relays to optical fibers, is described
