Abstract
Heavy ion accelerators were used to produce analyzed beams of He, Li, C, N and O ions. Stopping powers for these beams were measured using surface barrier particle detectors to determine energy shifts of transmitted beams through thin, self-supporting films of carbon. Disagreement amongst previously published results implies that difficulties existed that had not been recognized or that had not been adequately treated. This paper describes a systematic study of stopping powers in which all parameters involved in the measurements were carefully controlled and cross checked.
