Abstract
A flexible and protected virtual ring network is proposed to interconnect corporate LANs in the metropolitan area. It is based on multiple light paths between an N /spl times/ N arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) located in a central office and N remote routers connected to the AWG with a single fiber in star shape. The ring employs one optical amplifier to boost the signal power and its size is arbitrarily adjustable. Virtual rings of different sizes were experimentally confirmed and bit error rates below 10/sup -10/ were measured at 2.5 Gb/s for some characteristic links with an estimated power penalty of 0.3 dB.
