Abstract :
Two types of disturbance instability of simple adaptive schemes are analyzed. A drift equation shows how stable equilibria are forced to infinity by infrequent but persistent switches of a constant disturbance. The σ-modification proposed by P. Ioannou counteracts these instabilities.
