Abstract :
A case study is presented involving the switching of large reactors on a power transmission system including an HVDC terminal and static VAR compensator in close proximity. Switching the subject reactor without preinsertion resistors led to field problems with harmonic distortion and offset currents. The study provides insight to the system behavior for reactor switching events. The results provide a sound basis for selecting control and equipment modifications to permit normal reactor switching
