Abstract :
A protection system for a superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) device is presented. It uses switchable semiconductors at cryogenic temperatures which were examined recently. The protection system will be tested at the SMES pilot plant under construction at Technische Universitat Munchen. Two profoundly studied applications for SMES will be examined experimentally with this testing plant.<>
