Abstract :
A 3 dB enhancement of the small-signal gain has been obtained at 1537 nm in a 12.7 km distributed erbium-doped fibre amplifier by Raman amplification of the 1480 nm pump. By copumping at 1319 nm, the 1480 nm erbium pump radiation was amplified by the 800 cm-1 Raman gain band of silica, which resulted in an increased erbium amplifier gain at the signal wavelength of 1537 nm.
