Abstract
A torque sensor based on a pair of symmetrical helical knurls is described. Operation is based on the distinctive anisotropy and separation of principal stresses attributable to knurl shape and helix angle. This is made clear by finite-element method analysis. Maximum sensitivity is found for knurls having ±45° helix angles. A model for the output signal as a function of applied torque is developed based on the uniaxial anisotropy associated with the knurl shape and the stress anisotropy arising with the torque.
