Abstract
The year 1980 is pivotal for Diagnostic Radiologic Instrumentation because of increasing intelligence present in equipment, digitalization of medical images, and increased use of image processing. There is a better understanding of image quality requirements needed for medical diagnoses reflected in both hardware design and clinical examination strategies. This paper reviews some of the contemporary hardware used in conventional x-ray diagnosis. Additionally, special topics of an investigatory nature (such as digital image handling) are discussed. Most other significant future trends in medical imaging are discussed in other papers included in this special issue of the Transactions.
