Abstract :
The clothing industry was one of the earliest and its basic principles have changed little over the centuries. It remains a craft industry with typically low capital investment and added value per employee. It now faces rapidly escalating costs and increasing competition from developing countries. These problems have been recognised by most forward-looking manufacturers and considerable advances have been made in the application of production engineering principles. This is a rapidly growing field, particularly in the improvement of methods, both sewing and handling. It is indeed a field vital to the future of the industry.
