Abstract :
Parametric results of EMP-induced overvoltages on overhead transmission lines are reported. The results have been obtained with an analytical model of an overhead transmission line that accounts for: (1) frequency-dependent characteristics of lines; (2) EMP coupling to the line conductors; (3) EMP coupling to tower structures; and (4) the grounding structures of the transmission towers. The results indicate that neutral conductors and transmission tower grounding drastically reduce the EMP-induced overvoltages on transmission towers. For distribution overhead circuits, the EMP induced overvoltages may be above the basic insulation level. For transmission circuits, it is possible to select design parameters such as to assure that EMP-induced overvoltages are below the insulation level of the line
