Abstract :
The cost of a significant amount of plant and facilities found in conventional schemes can be eliminated by integrating HVDC substations directly with generating units. The results of a study to quantify these benefits are outlined. An actual hydroelectric power station design was used, incorporating a HVDC thyristor valve scheme in a hypothetical situation. The financial and other benefits determined for this example are presented together with conclusions and recommendations for future projects and further areas of study
