Abstract
The replacement of obsolescent 500 kV series-capacitor banks with metal-oxide-protected higher-current-rated capacitor banks is discussed. They are the largest metal-oxide-protected capacitor banks in operation in the world. The method for selecting the metal-oxide-varistor rating is described and the system component designs-including a unique seismic-design platform- are presented along with definitive fault testing and operational data
