            Abstract : 
The relative transmission losses of TE- and TM-like waves through a metal-coated coupler half is measured as a function of the overlay index. For very thin metal films, the TE-like wave was found to be more lossy than the TM-like wave for certain overlay indices. The present study should find applications in the design of inline fibre-optic polarisers and sensors.
