Abstract :
This paper discusses the potential use of an on-line computer aid for the initial training of robot technicians. The system under investigation, Rhino-Aid, uses computer graphics and a computer-implemented advisor model to aid Rhino robot technicians during training. The graphics part of Rhino-Aid consists of two screens, a top view and a side view, which provide simulated displays of the robot from two perspectives. The advisor model of Rhino-Aid provides suboptimal advice to the technician upon request, for the purpose of motivating the technician to perform better than the advisor. Results of an experiment to evaluate the effectiveness of Rhino-Aid suggest the usefulness of the graphics screens, but not necessarily the advisor model.
