Abstract :
The progress and status of the National Waste Terminal Storage Program (NWTS) is discussed. Ongoing site characterization activities are described along with waste package and repository design development efforts. Overall systems and licensing work is reviewed. These activities are set in the context of program objectives and scope, strategy implementation, and the technical and institutional impacts of pending waste management legislation, regulatory activities, and NEPA compliance.
