Abstract
With the application of Prony analysis on the fault signals, this letter obtains a linear relationship between the fault location and the inverse of damping coefficient of the fundamental frequency component in the Prony model. This linear relation naturally implies a simple algorithm to detect the fault location when a fault occurs on a transmission line. The fault signals are simulated in virtual test bed (VTB). Single-phase and three-phase faults with symmetrical and asymmetrical types at different locations on transmission lines are simulated. The fault-phase voltage and current data are recorded and analyzed by applying the Prony analysis.
