  • Abstract
The electric field between two oppositely charged concentric cylindrical conductors is proportional to 1/r where r is the radial distance from the axis of the pair of conductors. The magnetic field around a straight wire carrying a current is also proportional to 1/r. Both these fields can act as ion or electron beam lenses for hollow tubular beams. Coaxial with the conductors. For the beam moving close to the inner conductor, r small, the fields are strong and powerful focusing is possible. Some of the characteristics of these new systems are described, recent applications mentioned, and future uses suggested including the generation of synchrotion radiation.
