Abstract :
The multiplicative process in which incident primary particles produce secondary particles is discussed statistically. The variance of the number of secondaries is shown to depend on the mean values and variances of the number of primaries and of the multiplication. The result is essentially different in form from that applicable when the input and output variables and the multiplication are continuous.
