            Abstract : 
A modified polarimeter suitable for measuring very small ellipticities in polarised light is used, by virtue of the Kerr effect, to derive the voltage distribution in electrically stressed n-hexane. An unexpected oscillation was found to occur, although the integral of the time-average stress across the gap was within 5% of the applied voltage.
