Optical breakdown thresholds in helium

The breakdown of helium gas at the focus of a Q-switched laser is considered theoretically. Calculated values of the optical breakdown flux F, for various atomic densities N, are compared with Minck´s experimental values. For F>5×1030 photons per cm2s¿1 results appear to be independent of the radiation coherence, and a tentative explanation is advanced for this.
