Abstract :
It is shown how the thickness of the sample, the nature of the surrounding media, and the primary beam energy influence the electric field and potential induced by the trapped charges in a given insulator. The analysis is valid for any kind of insulator (defined by its permittivity ε) bombarded by charged particles, because it is based on simple electrostatic arguments. The results may explain the discrepancies observed when a given insulator is investigated by various techniques at various laboratories or when its shape is changed
