Abstract :
The criticality of academic computing in engineering education has become increasingly evident. The Harvey Mudd College engineering program, which emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach to problem solving, wherein the various engineering areas, such as chemical, computer, electrical, mechanical, and structural, use the computer as a common educational tool, is described. The client/server computing model mirrors the Harvey Mudd College interdisciplinary education environment. Specific actions taken in two areas, network development and distributed computing, required for an academic computing environment based on the client/server model are discussed
