Abstract :
A comprehensive mathematical approach to teaching binary arithmetic to students in a first course on the topic is presented. The weighted sum expression to represent signed numbers in 2´s complement notation is developed and logically used to derive all the rules for arithmetic operations. 1´s complement arithmetic is similarly dealt with. The superiority of the present approach over the conventional approach is pointed out
