Abstract
The operation of negative-electron-affinity photoemitters is discussed briefly and some of the important design considerations are listed. The spectral response and dark current of the new emitters are compared to those of conventional photoemitters. It is shown that in either property more than an order of magnitude improvement over conventional photocathodes is achieved in some representative negative-electron-affinity photoemitters.
