Abstract :
The author provides a viewpoint on how broadband local network evolution might occur in the United Kingdom recognizing that worldwide developments will also have a significant influence. He first looks in some detail at the existing broadband situation, namely, cable TV, and considers how this relates to the telecommunications system, which, with its increasing use of fiber, is itself providing a broadband medium. Network topology is reviewed, examining in particular the characteristics of the distributed-star structure. Service aspects are also considered.<>
