Abstract :
Recent papers have described the ´crossed field antenna´, and have offered an explanation of its properties in terms of ´Poynting vector synthesis´. In this Letter the antenna is analysed in a more conventional manner, providing an alternative explanation of its operation. The importance of the alternative is its compatibility with the Wheeler criteria for electrically small antennas. Extrapolation to very small antennas then encounters the expected efficiency-bandwidth limitations.
