Abstract :
The author discusses the use of default hierarchies to allow for the rules and exceptions in pronouncing English words and names correctly. She explains a default hierarchy of rules as a system of knowledge representation that combines the advantages of expert systems and neural networks. Their architecture and training are described.<>
