Abstract :
A system study guide is provided for the correction of voltage dips due to large motor startups with static VAR compensators (SVCs). The method utilizes times simulations, which are an important aid in the equipment design and specification. The author illustrates the process of setting-up a computer model and performing time simulations. The study process is demonstrated through an example, the Shawnee feeder in the Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation service area. The example demonstrates both the flexibility of time simulations as a planning tool, and the effectiveness of SVCs in correcting voltage problems at distribution voltage levels
