Abstract :
It is shown that, for a diode mixer in which the input and local-oscillator frequencies are nearly equal, the minimum conversion loss is, quite generally, 3dB. This only depends on the diode behaving as a time-varying resistance, and on the terminating impedances presented to each pair of neighbouring modulation products being the same.
