Abstract :
A penalty-based discretization algorithm is proposed. The algorithm consistently provides a near-optimal discrete solution for shunt controls without combinatorial search. It has been implemented in a production grade Newton optimal power flow program and tested on two actual power networks. Tests showed that the algorithm provides near-optimal discrete solutions
