Title :
Sight for sore ears [visual aids for the blind]
Abstract :
This article describes the vOICe system, which allows a visually impaired person to "see" by using his ears for visual input. Software that can be run by a laptop computer, carried in a backpack, translates images captured by a video camera into sounds that the brain uses to create crude mental renderings of what the camera is aimed at.
