Abstract :
Students´ feedback on a first year course are interpreted in the context of their expectations about the course and their motivation towards engineering. The students were attracted to engineering by realistic expectations about the rewards of the profession but these were sometimes based on practical rather than theoretical aspirations. Many students were badly prepared for the independent learning environment at university and excessive course demands contributed to poor progress and loss of interest.
