Abstract :
Under impulse conditions, the energy to form a tree channel must come from the electric field as formation of a substantially conducting channel "shorts out" part of the field. This concept is developed into a basis for the energy available to form a breakdown channel under single impulse conditions. The energy of formation is derived from basic material properties, and energy balance is used to develop criteria for channel formation.
