Abstract
Traces the influence of special-purpose integrated and LSI circuits in digital switching systems. The existence of custom digital chips, codecs and filters, and high- and low-voltage analog cross-point arrays is related to the choice between alternative architectures. Recent trends toward replacing mature components such as transformers by subscriber line interface circuits (SLICs) are outlined.
