Abstract
The nature of soliton waves and the potential of optical solitons for long-distance repeaterless transmission are discussed, and the pioneering experiments are recounted. Techniques for generating and transmitting solitons are described. The discovery of the existence of a limit on transmission distance, due to timing jitter, and ways to extend that limit are discussed.<>
