Abstract
An optical delay interferometer (ODI) is proposed to compensate the signal distortion in a directly modulated distributed feedback laser diode. Experiments with an ODI demonstrate improvement in pulse shape by suppressing pulse overshoot in directly modulated lasers. The power penalty is decreased by 1 dB. Numerical simulations for the waveform compensation agree with the experimental results.
