Abstract :
The general Goppa code construction is applied to certain so-called cyclotomic fields of algebraic functions. The resulting codes are metabelian group codes with binary subfield subcodes of minimum distance d≳(1-R)N/log2 log 2N for a given rate R and length N approaching ∞
