The 2006 IEEE Information Theory Society Paper Award was jointly awarded to Alon Orlitsky, Narayana P. Santhanam, and Junan Zhang for their paper "Universal Compression of Memoryless sources Over Unknown Alphabets," which appeared in the IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, vol. 50, no. 7, pp. 1469-1481, July 2004.
