Abstract :
For users of technical workstations, and the PC as well, the standard approach to interaction with the machine is now a graphical user interface (GUI) based on windows, icons, menus and pointers (WIMPs). Manufacturer-dependent windowing systems are now coming to an end with the acceptance of the Massachussetts Institute of Technology´s (MIT´s) X Window System as an industry standard GUI. The X Window System is described by the author
