Abstract
Distance learning, or open learning, is gaining popularity in the ever-growing market for continuing education at the same time as the spread of technology is allowing many new suppliers into the field. The IEE is launching its own selection of courses on the back of the 16th Edition Wiring Regulations. The author discusses the history of distance learning and how it has improved with advances in technology. The use of video recording and computer based teaching by the IEE is discussed. The process of producing video material using the example of the Aston University system is described. The use of interactive video and CD-ROM technology in distance learning is discussed
