Abstract :
We show that the state of the art CCD (charge-coupled device) technology is capable of imaging X-ray photons with an energy resolution comparable with photoelectron shot noise. Soft X-ray energy resolutions of as little as 135 eV FWHM have been measured, and all degrading effects accounted for. We argue that with careful choice of operating conditions and alterations to the architecture, the photoelectron shot noise will be the dominant factor in the energy resolution above ~1 keV.
