Interference effects between modes of planar optical waveguides

We report the observation of interference effects between guided modes of planar step-index integrated optical waveguides. Interference has been observed between different combinations and types of modes, some for the first time. Beat length measurements are reported and compared with theoretical calculations. Possible applications of these experiments to the analysis of integrated optical waveguides are discussed.
