Developmental activities in Japan focused on carbon-fiber reinforced plastics (CFRPs) and thermal control materials are reviewed both for spacecraft applications and for their performance in a simulated space environment. Japanese space development activities are summarized. Materials application for spacecraft use and space environmental effects on materials are examined. The latter include radiation damage, electrostatic charging, and the atomic oxygen effect.<>
