Abstract :
A deep understanding of all levels of engineering practice can be invaluable to a general manager of an engineering firm. The qualities needed for a general manager may be found in the professional engineer, but need to be developed and trained. A structure of opportunity, training and assesment must be established within companies so that engineers may travel a career path to general management, and thus enrich the management potential in the industry.
