Abstract :
This paper was delivered as a luncheon address before the IEEE Broadcast Symposium in Washington, DC, September 20, 1985. It includes a series of suggested technical and policy alternatives to aid the viability of AM Radio at a time when AM was losing major portions of its listening audience to FM broadcasting. These alternatives include: ¿Improving aging antenna systems ¿AM/FM program duplication ¿Improved AM receivers ¿Changes to FCC "duopoly" rules ¿Use of synchronous transmitters ¿Changes to "clear channel" rules ¿Noise suppression in the AM band
