Abstract :
The asymptotic limit approached by the loss of a planar waveguide bend when the waveguide V-number is large is determined. The design conditions producing negligible loss and maximum curvature for typical V-numbers of interest are given. Typically, for the loss to be close to the asymptotic limit, it is sufficient to choose V>2.8.
