Abstract :
A wear-out failure mechanism found in singlemode fused-fibre couplers is proposed and evidence presented. Exposure to humidity causes a swelling of the epoxy supporting the taper which in turn applies strain. Defects on the surface of the taper grow under the combined effects of humidity and strain and can, eventually, cause a fracture.
