Abstract :
The results of an experiment are described in which contextual information is used to improve the performance of an optical character reader when reading English text. Specifically, English is modeled as a Markov source and the Viterbi algorithm is used to do maximum a posteriori sequence estimation on the output of an optical character reader (OCR).
