Abstract :
For a long time, language translations by using powerful large computers have been studied in laboratories. In recent years, owing to the rapid progress in microcomputer performance, a handheld electronics language translator appeared. The first handheld language translator was introduced in the end of 1978, and then more two companies announced their own handy-type translators in the United States. In Japan, two models of hand-held language translators with 5x7 matrix dots-pattern liquid crystal display (LCD) were produced in 1979 and 1980.
